Hello - I had attached a similar post to an install forum but have been advised to start a new discussion.

(Background: I have been a programmer and written HTML before, and spent >4 weeks already fathoming out many languages used in various open source (Zope, plone, PHP, CSS, ad infinitem). All a big time consumer while no content is getting posted.)

My functional need is for separate steams of information (likes a news function) which can be logically grouped together and individual threads investigated by readers. WP can't do this as categories only apply to a single blog and articles in pages cannot be 'categorized'. The need is like 'smart folders' in Zope or Mac Unix.

My intent is to create a blog for each logical grouping and allow users to zoom into areas that matter to them that way.

QUESTION 1: Is it possible to set up Lyceum so that a first page (home page of the domain) has news on it that pertains to different topics which are listed and linked to to effectively establish the several threads I envisage? (ie opening main page has news about any of the subjects under say 'energy', each would be tagged, marked or or somehow categorized so that it would show up on a 'thread' for 'Oil' say or 'Solar', or BOTH if appropriate?)

QUESTION 2: If Lyceum allows this, how do I install it? Simply FTP the files up to the server with the WP on it and then what? (I did check out the above and searched forums but have not fully understood how to install)

Thanks very much for help and I greatly appreciate your efforts.

I guess I don't understand your application very well as it strikes me that a blog seems to be an odd tool choice for implementing it. Be that as it may, though, I think you misunderstand the relationship between Lyceum and WordPress. Lyceum is a derivative or "fork" of the WP codebase. You install it instead of WP when you need support for multiple blogs.

BT - thanks for your comment - It may be an odd choice, but it's one of the few ways I've found to implement a site with news articles, with different threads, some that allow comments, as well as reference columns and ad space. If you have any alternative s/w you'd recommend I'd love to know of it. I know a company that offers this custom built on Zope/Python but their content input & management interface is very poor (unlike wordpress).

I still don't know what steps to take to install Lyceum over (or as you put it - instead of) Wordpress at my host server.

    Thanks again.

How about a wiki? Personally I prefer PmWiki (http://www.pmwiki.com/), but there are many out there. Although wiki's are usually open they have security around them so you can manage who edits/creates. PmWiki is very easy to setup, and has a very active community around it.
