Just wanted to say congratulations for the new forum. I find it easier than mailing lists for discussing ideas.

    Keep up the good work!

Nice. I'm curious how you decided on Vanilla, rather than punBB or bbPress.

Also, is there no way to subscribe to a thread (to get email alerts about new replies?) Without that, people have to remember to pro-actively come back to the forum again and again to look for responses.

I decided on Vanilla because of comments in this thread:

    http://lyceum.ibiblio.org/2007/01/10/which-forum-software-should-we-use/

I like vanilla's simplicity, solid markup, good looks, and thriving user community. I also like that there was a mediawiki integration solution just sitting there waiting for me :)

I'll look into installing an email alert plugin.

okay email notifications are in place. it must be done per-thread and can't be on by default (the plugin does not support that). what do folks think of this?

Ah, the MediaWiki integration does sound really attractive / useful. Wish there were more inter-system bridges like that out there in the OSS world.

I'm not seeing a "subscribe to thread" widget at the bottom of this thread.

The rss and email links are in the upper left.

John - Can those links be moved into the new comment box? Upper left of the page is totally unintuitive from a UI perspective, and also totally non-standard. I never would have thought to look for them there, and I doubt many other people would either.

Nice one John, quick to load and easy on the eye, I also much prefer it to the mailing lists.

What will happen to the mailing lists? There is some good info on there.

scott- i'm not much of a vanilla hacker yet, but that is an excellent idea. bug me again in a week or two if i haven't done it by then. also, do you have an example that you can show me, so i can mimic the layout?

craig- hmm, i figured we'd keep both channels, but maybe it would be wise to decommission the email list. after the forum has a few weeks to get rolling i'll ask folks on the email list what they think.

??? Virtually every discussion board on the internet has this. You'll need to be a registered user of a forum to see it, so I can't point you to one in specific, but try joining almost any discussion forum, go to make a post and look around in or near the Post Comment area - there's almost always a Subscribe option. In this case, I'd do it as a set of radio buttons directly below the "Format comment as" options.

scott-- yes i've seen them, i was wondering if there was a particular combination of wording and layout that you, scott, particularly liked, so i could copy it :)

    Thanks for the forum!

So how does the integration with lyceum, vanilla and mediawiki work? Anyone tried it yet?
